The governance point deserves attention: the CTF team is not run by the SAO as a sports representative team. It is a self-organised group of PolyU students with computing backgrounds, building its record within the cybersecurity community and on competition platforms. Its closest resemblance to a sports team is that both live on sustained training, clear role division and quick reflexes; its greatest difference is that the field of play is code, traffic and system logs rather than a pitch, and its results never enter the SAO's annual sports statistics — they live on the team's own Awards page.
Bioengineering: What Project Took the iGEM Team from Silver to Gold in Two Years?
Among interdisciplinary competitions, the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is the fastest-growing line for PolyU in recent years. According to the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology (ABCT), the PolyU iGEM team won a gold medal in 2024, ranking among the top ten undergraduate teams globally, with dual nominations for "Best Oncology Project" and "Best New Composite Part"※. This followed the inaugural team's silver medal in 2023 — a step up for PolyU in the competition.
The gold has a specific project behind it. The 11-member team designed a dual-targeting nanobody under the title "Panobody," aiming to overcome pancreatic cancer cells' resistance to gemcitabine, competing among 195 undergraduate teams worldwide※. Entrepreneurship Hackathon: Who Runs PolyHack and How Big Is It?
The teams covered so far all involve "PolyU students going out to compete." PolyHack reverses the direction — PolyU students organise a competition for the world to come to them. According to PolyU's official press release, PolyHack was initiated by students and is co-organised with the University's Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office (KTEO) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP)※. This attachment differs from every team discussed above: it sits on the entrepreneurship and knowledge-transfer administrative tree, not under the Faculty of Engineering or a single department.
In scale, the 2023 edition had already reached international-event dimensions. Officially, PolyHack 2023 attracted more than 700 participants from over 80 regions, with challenge themes covering artificial intelligence, fintech, smart cities and the Internet of Things, running in a hybrid format over two weeks and closing on 24 June 2023※. The competition proceeded through three stages — qualifying, ideation and implementation, and a final pitch — with first, second and third prizes going to teams ALGA, Birru and GoPark respectively, and diamond-level sponsors including Chinachem Group and Huawei.
PolyHack's significance lies in offering an alternative governance model: unlike the Formula or robotics teams with their year-round training and fixed rosters, it exercises innovation and entrepreneurial capability through a short-cycle, high-intensity ideate–prototype–pitch format, and through KTEO and the Science Park plugs an on-campus competition into Hong Kong's innovation and technology ecosystem. Esports: Does PolyU Actually Have an Official Representative Team?
On esports, the research must be especially disciplined. As of July 2026, across publicly searchable materials, no esports representative team operated by PolyU in the University's name over the long term, with a stable public record of competition results, can be found. This differs markedly from the robotics, CTF and iGEM teams, which have official results pages or departmental announcements — so this article does not dress up scattered team performances as official representative-team honours.
Two matters must be distinguished. The first is esports education: Hong Kong's post-secondary sector has in recent years indeed offered associate degree and diploma programmes related to esports, covering event operations, industry management, streaming technology and entrepreneurial strategy — but on public search, such programmes are more commonly found at institutions like HKU SPACE Community College※. Whether PolyU's own system currently offers a corresponding, active esports-specific qualification cannot be directly established from public materials; this article notes the doubt and does not invent an answer. The second is competitive representative teams: Hong Kong university esports is largely conducted through self-organised student teams, inter-university events or commercial platform competitions, with records scattered and stability far below the annual archiving seen in USFHK sports or in events like Robocon and CTF.
The criterion is therefore simple: should official records later emerge from PolyU's Student Affairs Office, relevant faculties, event organisers or Hong Kong academic esports bodies — specifying event name, organising body, year of participation, team member identities, placements and sources — they can be incorporated by the same standard applied to the teams above. Without those elements, esports rumour stays out of the formal record. This is not to belittle esports but to hold it to the same rule applied everywhere: no source, no claim.
Where Do Innovation Teams' Money and Resources Come From?
Beyond results, innovation teams face a problem sports teams barely worry about: where the money and heavy resources come from. A Formula car's materials, fabrication and competition travel are a constant large outlay; robotics parts and consumables, CTF servers and travel, iGEM reagents and registration fees — none of these can be sustained long-term out of students' own pockets. PolyU innovation teams therefore generally run on a hybrid supply of "institutional underpinning plus external sponsorship."
The institutional underpinning has been seen throughout: the Industrial Centre supplies machine tools and workshops, departments supply laboratories, and the Faculty of Engineering and KTEO supply supervisors and connections. External sponsorship is raised team by team. For PolyHack 2023, the official announcement lists diamond-level sponsors including Chinachem Group and Huawei, with further companies at platinum and silver tiers※; the Formula E-racing team, per the university's official publication, has besides the Faculty of Engineering and the Industrial Centre, also received support from advisors drawn from the motorsport industry and a number of sponsors※. This gives innovation teams a natural whiff of the "small startup" about them. A Formula team that must simultaneously manage people, money, schedules and external relations is organisationally no simpler than a fledgling company; this is precisely why PolyU treats such competitions as an extension of professional and applied education — they train not single skills but the integrated capacity to turn technology, resources and organisation into a finished product.
Sports vs Innovation Teams: Two Governance Logics in Comparison
Placing sports representative teams and innovation competition teams side by side best illustrates PolyU's two institutional paths for student external competition. Both discharge the function of "representing PolyU in competition," yet their governance is nearly opposite:

The two are juxtaposed but not conflated — which is precisely why innovation competitions receive their own research supplement rather than being folded into the sports record.
From robotics to Formula racing, from CTF to iGEM, and on to PolyHack's entrepreneurial pitches, the PolyU student's "field of play" extends far beyond a single sports pitch. These teams sit on different administrative trees, follow different formats and are judged by different standards, yet together they sketch the most distinctive extracurricular character of an applied university: the ability to turn classroom knowledge into working machines, systems, algorithms and proposals — and to test them in competition. As for esports, the door is open — waiting only for an official record worthy of the name to knock.
