Deep File: The Surface Sampling and Packing System — Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6
The Surface Sampling and Packing System developed by Professor Yung Kai-leung's team at PolyU helped Chang'e-5 complete China's first lunar sample-return mission in 2020, and Chang'e-6 achieve humanity's first far-side sampling in 2024; PolyU has also received lunar soil samples to research water presence on the Moon.
Deep Space Explorations Research Centre, Mars Camera and Planetary Mapping
PolyU's Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations (RCDSE) was founded in May 2021, with Kai Leung Yung as Director and Bo Wu and Tao Yu as Associate Directors; in 2024 it brought 442.6 mg of Chang'e-5 lunar regolith to campus, focusing on finding water in the lunar soil; in 2025 it was admitted to the International Deep Space Exploration Association (IDSEA).

The Contest for the Third Medical School (2024–2025)
PolyU bid for Hong Kong's third medical school on the strength of "AI + medicine" and inter-professional training, but the government ultimately chose HKUST — PolyU's lack of a teaching hospital was widely seen as its biggest weakness.
